Honda Cars India Ltd (HCIL) had recently announced that it will replace the 'previous-generation' airbag inflators of 2,23,578 vehicles, making it the largest ever product recall by a car manufacturer in India. Honda has called its CR-V, Civic, City and Jazz models under the recall campaign that involves Takata's malfunctioning airbag inflators. However, the Honda City has been the most affected model with 1,43,154 units being recalled.
The vehicles sold between 2007 and 2012 have primarily been recalled while over 54,200 Civics, manufactured between 2003 and 2012 have been called under the campaign.
As published in an Economic Times report, this is the longest time period of recall for any of its models.
The US safety regulator - The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration - this year announced that Takata's 33.8 million vehicles must be recalled due to faulty airbags.
Under its global recall campaign, the carmaker had recalled as many as 11,000 units of Accord, CR-V and Civic in May this year.
A total of 24.5 million units have been called globally to fix the airbag issue. The move, undoubtedly, hampered the earnings of Honda last year. From its estimated 545 billion yen, it witnessed a loss and managed to make just 522.7 billion yen.
The campaign will take place at HCIL dealerships pan India in different phases beginning from October 12th of this year and would be free of cost. The company had also said that they would interact with the consumers directly.
The customers will get to know whether their car is covered under this recall programme by submitting their 17 character alpha-numeric Vehicle Identification Number on the special micro site which has been created on the company's website.
