Generally speaking, traceroute is a network diagnostic tool that displays the path between your computer and a specific network address / website. Wanna know how many hops it takes to get to google.com? Traceroute can tell you. The command is built into OS X, Windows, and Unix systems, and it's pretty easy to use.
