Ultrasonic readers work by creating a 3D map of your fingerprint instead of the 2D scans used in current devices from Apple, Samsung and others. That means a more accurate scanner that can’t be tricked as easily. It even works when your fingers are wet.
The Mi5 is expected to pack Qualcomm’s upcoming Snapdragon 820, which could be one of the first processors to include the company’s Snapdragon Sense ID. However, the first devices packing this new chip aren’t expected to arrive until early next year. That means we probably won’t see Xiaomi’s next flagship phone announced for at least four or five more months.
The Chinese company has released a steady string of new phones this year, but we’re still waiting to see what is has planned for the Mi5. Rumor has it the device could feature a Quad HD display, a 3000mAh battery, a 16-megapixel rear camera, and a 13-megapixel front-facing shooter for under $400. USB-C also seems pretty likely, since Xiaomi already offers one device with the reversible charging port.
Of course, we’re not expecting Xiaomi to offer the Mi5 in the U.S. anytime soon. The company still only operates in China and a few other developing countries, though hopefully we’ll see other phone-makers adopt Qualcomm’s ultrasonic technology as well.
