The first Windows 10 Technical Preview for phones dropped almost nine months ago, and while the number of noticeable bugs was overwhelmed by new features and system enhancements off the bat, Microsoft’s software engineers sure took their sweet time to ensure everything is nice and smooth when the mobile OS finally hits general availability.Though still stuck in pre-release beta stages, Win 10 Mobile accounts for more than 5 percent of the existing ecosystem, a figure no doubt bound to considerably grow once the Lumia 950 and 950 XL ship to early adopters.Sometime next month, older members of the device family should also start receiving over-the-air updates, if we are to believe recent social media echoes. But there’s a (slim) chance a handful of Lumia owners will be delivered WP 8.1 replacements by the end of November, based on a new webpage titled “Software update for Lumia with Windows 10” surfaced on Microsoft’s central portal. This mentions nothing of possible timelines, instead providing routine instructions and FAQ answers, but the fact Redmond saw fit to open the website subsection already suggests we may be in for a pleasant, premature surprise.
Keep in mind there are about a dozen handhelds confirmed to gradually receive a first wave of Windows 10 makeovers worldwide in the following months, including low and high-end Lumia 430, 435, 532, 535, 540, 635, 640, 640 XL, 735, 830 and 930 models, as the only hardware requirement is a minimum of 8GB internal storage space.
