Samsung receives Snapdragon 820 orders from Qualcomm

Samsung makes tons of silicon for not only itself, but for many, many clients. Chipmaking, however, has been forecast to become a laggard to the chaebol’s bottom line, especially with the loss of the Apple lot. It’s also been under intense scrutiny from workers’ advocates. But if there’s any good news to help the unit out, it may come from Qualcomm.

The company announced it’s beginning production of logic chips with 2nd-generation 14nm FinFET process for use in its own Exynos 8 chips as well as Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 820. Samsung believes the Low-Power Plus process will cut energy consumption by 15 percent as well as improve speed by 15 percent over last generation’s 14nm process.

No word on the scale of orders, but we’re already talking about at least half of the this generation’s Galaxy S devices as well as the LeTV Max Pro and a few other devices in the wings. Samsung could be making up lost ground from TSMC.
