BlackBerry’s suite of Priv Android apps make early Google Play appearance

Unknown
BlackBerry’s first foray into the world of Android-powered hardware is practically upon us: you can get your Priv order in now, and the phone’s set to arrive in just a couple weeks. And while the Priv isn’t running pure-stock Android, it’s certainly got one of the lighter skins you’ll find. Despite how much of the standard Android experience BlackBerry’s leaving intact, the Priv is still very much getting some custom BlackBerry software, and much of it’s going to be deployed on the app level. In anticipation of the phone’s arrival, BlackBerry’s already started loading a bunch of these titles onto the Google Play Store.
Granted, without a Priv in your hand, these apps won’t do you a lot of good just yet: you can’t just download and install them on the Android of your choice. But they do help give us a preview of what to look forward to, highlight app features, offering screenshots and generally giving us a taste of what getting work done of the Priv might be like.
More than that, they also speak to what BlackBerry’s thinking in terms of software updates; releasing its core apps like this empowers the company to get updates out in a timely manner, rather than relying on system-level Android updates.
And while there’s no sign of a second Android-based BlackBerry phone just yet, getting your apps set up like this would be a smart move if you’re updating them across multiple models at once – we’re just saying.
