Silicon is what powers the steel and screen of our smartphones. Every year, while not as exciting as the smartphone schedule, there’s always a flood of new chips that get assigned to the devices of the future. It’s alucrative business and the drama can get pretty dirty sometimes. LG has been on its own in its NUCLUN system-on-a-chip efforts, but the struggling smartphone manufacturer seems to want some helping hands.
Enter an agreement with Intel as the two have plans for a new mobile processing system. We’re not sure if the two are working more in the Nuclun’s territory or if LG might take off of Intel’s Atom blueprints.
For the semiconductor manufacturer, this looks to be a more direct avenue to bring its 14nm FinFET process to the mobile market via LG. 2016 could be its year, after all.
The move may not ever directly translate to a consumer draw for LG, but investing into its own smartphone innards to have the capacity of developing both new hardware and software features is important, as we have seen with the LG V10. Perhaps, these chips could give rise to a super-camera or screen beyond something a Snapdragon could power.
LG has plenty of goodwill. How good will it get for LG?
