Snapdragon 830 rumors suggest Qualcomm looking at 10nm process

Right now, look under the hood of a flagship-level smartphone and you’ve got a good shot at finding Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 810 powering things. And while the 810’s offered its processing might to no shortage of 2015 phones, we’re about to see a changing of the guard, with the first handsets build around the Snapdragon 820 looming just over the horizon. Chances are good we’ll see the 820 feature on a number of prominent 2016 smartphones, but what then? Well, we’re still a long way off from any actual hardware being ready, but now a new rumor looks to what Qualcomm might be working on for its Snapdragon 830.

In addition to things like clock speed or core design, the performance of chip can be dictated by the process on which it’s fabricated: more advanced fabrication techniques using smaller logic gates create the potential for cooler, more energy efficient circuitry.

The Snapdragon 810 is made on a 20nm process, and the Snapdragon 820 will be made on a 14nm process. According to this source, we can expect the Snapdragon 830 to be a 10nm chip.

Beyond that info, we also pick up a model number, claiming the 830 will arrive as Qualcomm’s MSM8998 – and based on the numbering the company’s used to date, that makes enough sense.
