It’s been just about a month since an APK teardown first hinted at a new subscription service coming to YouTube. Evidence pointed to something called YouTube Red emerging as a new a model to either complement or replace the existing Music Key, thought we were seriously short on details. Then yesterday we heard that Red could be nearly ready to go official, with word that a $10-a-month subscription plan would be announced today. Sure enough, Google has just confirmed that report, announcing the arrival of YouTube Red next week.
For $10 a month, YouTube Red strips the service of all its pre-roll and pop-up ads: none on the web, and none on your mobile devices. You can also save videos for offline playback, and handsets gain the ability to play clips in the background or with the screen off.
Currently, that’s all Red brings users, though there are plans in motion to flesh out the service next year with new content that non-subscribers won’t have access to.
YouTube Red gets started on October 28. You’ll be able to try the service for one month free, before deciding if it’s worth the $120 a year Google’s asking.
Additionally, Google drops word of a new YouTube Music app in the works, and while there’s no formal ETA, you can expect to see it start rolling out soon.
