iPhone shipments topped PC shipments in 2015 (by at least one measure)

Unknown

You like charts? Tech analyst Horace Dediu likes to craft charts for “idle amusement” on occasion and, based on data from market research firm Gartner, has found that iPhone shipments have surpassed Windows PC shipments in 2015. Furthermore, if we extrapolate current trend lines out to 2027, we might see Mac shipments up above PC shipments.
Of course, the PC space has been contracting in favor of smaller or more physically-versatile devices for productivity’s sake (at least, the buzzword right now is “productivity”). The industry is in consolidation and retooling.
A reminder here that charts aren’t crystal balls and market conditions change like a wishy-washy worrywart. Charts also take the assumption that Apple and Microsoft will remain relevant in these measures for the next decade. Also, different data firms will measure the ins-and-outs of these things differently, so there’s another caveat.
But hey, it’s all in interesting, if only “idle” fun.
And if you’re a little confused about the y-axis, those figures should be in 100,000s.
